A short walk, not a cross-town ride
Marni BKK Hostel publishes Khaosan Road at 500 m. The building is at 354/6-7 Soi Worapong, Wisutkasat Road, Ban Phan Thom, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok 10200, Thailand. From the soi you are in the backpacker neighborhood: food, travel shops, and the evening street, with the older royal district still close enough for a taxi or a longer walk.
The Grand Palace is 2.4 km on the same list. Democracy Monument is 900 m, Sanam Luang is 1.7 km, and the Bangkok National Museum is 1.7 km. This page does not turn those distances into walking minutes, because that depends on the route you take.
Around the street
Khaosan Road is Bangkok's backpacker strip in Banglamphu: restaurants, bars, and shops aimed at travelers. It is busier at night than on a weekday morning.
